XAVIER COATES’ AGE AND EARLY LIFE
Xavier Coates was born on 12 March 2001, and he turned 25 in 2026. The talented wing was born in Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, but did not live there for many years. While still an infant, Xavier moved to Australia with his family, and they lived in Cairns for two years. They moved on to the Gold Coast, where they settled, with Xavier starting to grow up.
While in Queensland, Xavier enrolled at Marymount College, with a strong bias towards athletics. His goal was to represent Papua New Guinea at the Olympics, but his teacher, Matt Geyer, came up with a plan. After realising Coates’ potential, Geyer made a plan with then-Queensland captain Greg Inglis[5], and the pair convinced Coates to pursue a career in rugby league. Their plan succeeded, changing Xavier’s life forever.
Coates joined the Currumbin Eagles, but did not impress much before he joined the Brisbane Broncos juniors, where he stood out. In 2018, he received an invitation to train with the first team and impressed the coaches, landing a place in the Queensland Under-18 Origin Squad.
The following year, he fast-tracked to senior rugby playing for Currumbin Eagles, making his Queensland Cup debut for the Tweed Heads Seagulls. However, Coates was not a contracted Gold Coast Titans player, and he joined the Broncos’ feeder club, the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Xavier Coates has developed into one of rugby league’s most exciting wingers since making his National Rugby League (NRL) debut with the Brisbane Broncos in 2019. Born in Papua New Guinea and raised on Australia’s Gold Coast, Coates was originally focused on athletics before shifting to rugby league, where his pace and athleticism quickly drew attention. He made his NRL debut for Brisbane in Round 16 of the 2019 season against Cronulla and enjoyed a dream start by scoring a try in his first match.
