THE SLOW RISE TO THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE

Unlike many top rugby professionals, Joe McCarthy saw a steady and tough rise to the top. Born on 26 March 2006, Joe turned 25 years old in 2026.

The powerful Irish lock was born in Manhattan, New York, in the United States. He stayed in New York for three years while his parents worked, until he returned to Ireland. They came and settled in Dublin, a city with many rugby schools, a sport he loved.

He enrolled at Blackrock College, where his main sport was always rugby, and he fought so much to get into the team. Unfortunately, he did not make the first team until his last year at the school. To him, rugby had been another failed passion; he quit the game for some months, only to come back after missing it, merely to play. Indeed, he had no hope of playing at the highest level.

“I meet people from school now, and they’re kind of shocked that I’m playing professional rugby. I mean, I wasn’t even near the Junior Cup team, he told Rugby World.

“I always loved rugby and had a drive to get better. I really wanted to be on the first team the whole time, but I was on the third.

“I’d put in the effort, and I wasn’t anywhere near it, and I was considering giving up.

“But without rugby, I didn’t know what to do with myself, so I went back.

“I loved the physical side of the game and being able to dominate in contact, and in sixth year it started to happen for me. I made the first team. I stuck at it and, eventually, it came good.”

Even though he studies at an elite rugby school, Blackrock, he failed to get into any major academy. He finally found an important call in 2021 to join the Leinster academy, a call that changed his life.

He excelled at the academy, and his standout performances earned him a call-up to the senior team.

PROFESSIONAL RUGBY – LEINSTER

After impressing in the academy, Joe McCarthy finally made his professional debut for Leinster in 2022. He debuted for Leinster during the 2021–22 United Rugby Championship against Cardiff, and immediately impressed.

Joe stayed with the senior team, forcing his way to the first team, and did so within a few months. Since then, he has been a key player in the Leinster ranks, and the Ireland national team could not ignore him.

IRELAND NATIONAL TEAM

Thanks to his big size, physicality and power, Joe drew a lot of attention from the national team. They called him later in 2022, including him in the Ireland national team squad for the June 2022 tour of New Zealand.

He went on to make his national team debut, coming on as a substitute in a win over Australia. Continuously proving his worth, he made it into the Irish squad for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Already a key player, he went on to play in all the games as Ireland retained the Six Nations Championship in 2024.

As of 2026, the boy who never saw himself playing for Ireland is now among the first names on Ireland’s national team.

Even veteran icons like Rob Herring are proud of him and happy to be in his team. “Having him scrumming behind you is unbelievable. For a young guy, he’s really honed his craft at scrum time, and he’s consistently delivering massive work behind us. Then there is his athleticism around the park as well. He makes big moments with his carries, and for a guy his age, he’s a very mature player. He has definitely developed.” Rob said heaping praise on big Joe.

JOE MCCARTHY’S HEIGHT, WEIGHT AND PLAYING STYLE

Joe McCarthy stands 1.98m tall and carries roughly 112–119kg, and he uses that frame like a weapon without playing like a slow “giant.” He attacks rucks with intent, wins collisions with a high, tight carry, and snaps defenders backwards to create front-foot ball.

In defence, he hunts shots in the 15-metre channels, folds quickly, and finishes tackles with real bite, then pops straight back to contest the next phase. He also offers genuine set-piece value: he times his jumps well, gives Leinster and Ireland a reliable lineout target, and competes aggressively on opposition throws.

When games get loose, he doesn’t drift; he works, communicates, and keeps his engine running to link play, clear out, and reset. Around the maul, he clamps on, drives square, and disrupts; with the ball in hand, he can tip-on or offload, but he stays disciplined too.

JOE MCCARTHY’S FAMILY (FATHER, MOTHER AND SIBLINGS)

Away from rugby, Joe McCarthy is a man born into a united and supportive family. His father, also named Joe, has shown several times how much he supports his children.

His mother is Paula McCarthy, and is one of the people close to the Irish lock. Several times, along with her husband Joe, she goes to matches to watch their son play.

Besides his parents, Joe McCarthy is also the brother of Paddy McCarthy, another professional rugby player. Paddy also plays for Leinster and the Ireland national team.

He also has another big brother, Andrew McCarthy, who is a top rugby fan and always cheers on his younger brother. As a family, they are close and support each other through both tough and good times.
