EARLY LIFE AND AGE
Karapani was born and raised in Auckland, with his roots firmly established in South Auckland. He developed his rugby skills through both rugby league and rugby union.
His junior rugby league journey began with the Ōtāhuhu Leopards. He also played rugby union with East Tamaki.
Karapani attended Pakuranga College, where his rugby development continued. His talent soon attracted attention from representative selectors. He represented the New Zealand Residents at the under-16 level. He later represented New Zealand Schoolboys at the under-18 level. Karapani also represented Samoa under-18s in 2019.
That background reflected his Samoan heritage and New Zealand upbringing. However, his professional pathway eventually became centred around New Zealand rugby league.

THE 2026 PUBLIC NUISANCE INCIDENT
Karapani also attracted attention away from the field in March 2026. The Brisbane Broncos confirmed that Queensland Police issued him with an infringement notice.
The offence listed was public nuisance. Police also issued Karapani with a banning notice following contact in Fortitude Valley. The incident occurred around 3.30 am on 28 March 2026.
The NRL Integrity Unit was informed about the matter, and ABC reported that the banning notice covered the Fortitude Valley precinct for 28 days.
The report also said police described the matter as a disturbance involving several people. It remained unclear whether Karapani was involved in the wider disturbance.
The incident followed Brisbane’s 26-12 victory over the Dolphins, where Karapani had played earlier that evening.
It became one of the off-field moments that added another chapter to his young career.
JOSIAH KARAPANI’S 2026 SEASON
Karapani continued playing for Brisbane in the 2026 season, making 22 appearances.
He scored eight tries and made 20 line breaks. He also recorded 56 tackle breaks and averaged 151 running metres.
