A few years later, in 2020, he made his Chiefs debut after injuries to Michael Allardice and Laghlan McWhannell. Another injury hit the Chiefs’ lock department with Naitoa Ah Kuoi, going down, leaving them with Tupou to trust. TUPOU VAA’I’S HEIGHT, WEIGHT AND PLAYING STYLE

Tupou Vaa’i stands 1.98 metres tall and weighs 118 kilograms, giving him a powerful, rangy frame. He uses that size to dominate collisions, carry hard, and disrupt opposition ball at set pieces. As a lock, he brings height to the lineout and real force in tight exchanges. He also offers mobility, covering ground quickly and working across the park with strong intent.

Vaa’i plays an aggressive game but stays busy rather than relying solely on bulk. He hits rucks, tackles with authority, and keeps driving through contact when phases stack up. He moves like a modern second-rower, linking phases, chasing kicks, and staying active off the ball. That blend of size and engine makes him valuable in both structured play and broken play. He has grown into leadership, matching his assertive, no-nonsense style. Overall, Vaa’i brings height, weight, power, mobility, and intent every time he steps onto the field.

“Every time I think about it, like the routes that I was taking to go home, I had to tell my dad that he’s drowning. It wasn’t a far distance. As a young kid, it felt like it was. It was pretty much 200 metres, but at the time it felt like 5km or something. As I look back at it now, I just easily could have done something better to save his life,” he said, speaking of his brother’s death.

Besides, Tavita Tupou has eight other siblings, six sisters and his young brother. Together as a family, they have since shown how united they are behind the All Blacks lock.
