EARLY LIFE AND FAMILY BACKGROUND
Born on 18 March 1997, Rieko Ioane grew up in Auckland, where he was born. The talented wing was born into a rugby family as both his parents had been professional players. His father, Eddie Ioane, was a professional rugby player who played for top teams, including Ricoh. He also represented Samoa at the 1991 Rugby World Cup.
His mother, Sandra Wihongi, was also a professional rugby player who, like her husband, represented her national team. To this day, Rieko’s mother remains actively involved in sports, serving as the current club manager of Ponsonby.
Adding to the depth of rugby in his family, Rieko’s big brother, Akira Ioane, is also a professional rugby player. Akira played for New Zealand’s top teams like the Blues and Auckland. He also represented New Zealand with the All Blacks, having made over 20 appearances.
After a few years in New Zealand, Rieko moved to Japan when his father, Eddie, signed for Ricoh Black Rams. After a few years in Japan, they moved back to New Zealand, where he continued with school.

CLUB CAREER
Coming from the Auckland Grammar School and University of Auckland ranks, Rieko immediately joined Auckland in the senior team.
For Auckland, the talented wing made 18 appearances and scored 70 points between 2015 and 2016. After 2016, he signed a massive contract with the Blues, where he remained until 2025. At the Blues, he played in 127 games and scored 275 points.
