MARCUS SMITH’S RISE – EARLY CAREER AND AGE
Born on 14 February 1999 in the Philippines, Marcus Smith began playing rugby at the age of seven in 2006.
He grew up in a poor neighbourhood in Singapore. His father played rugby at a lower level when Marcus was a child. Later, his father started a rugby team for local boys and kids with no homes. Marcus and his brothers joined the team and developed a love for the game together.
At thirteen, Marcus and his family moved to the United Kingdom, where he enrolled at Brighton College under a scholarship in 2012. While at Brighton College, he quickly made an impression and was appointed team captain.
Due to his outstanding performances, Marcus was named Player of the Tournament at the 2016 St Joseph’s Rugby Festival. Building on this success, he went on to introduce himself to several local rugby academies.
PROFESSIONAL CAREER
After impressing at Brighton College, Marcus made a bold move in 2016 to further develop his talent by joining the Harlequins academy, where he played for the Under-18 squad. Building on this progress, in March 2017, he was promoted from the EPDG to the full-time Academy.
After establishing himself as one of the most highly rated academy prospects through 2017, Marcus was called up to the first team later that year.
He made his professional debut on 2 September 2017 in the Premiership Rugby London Double Header fixture against London Irish at Twickenham Stadium.
At 18 years and 200 days, he was the Premiership’s second youngest fly-half debutant, showing his early impact.
