WHO IS KALYN PONGA’S PARENTS
Kalyn’s father is Andre Ponga, and his mother is Adine Ponga. The two parents have been at the centre of Kalyn’s development since the early days.
Back in the day, his father, Andre, once spoke about how he gave Kalyn the vision he is now loving.
“When he came to me, he was pretty honest, he said, ‘Dad, do I have to play?’ ‘Am I going to be able to play, for starters?” Andre started.
“Kalyn’s main priority is the Knights, first and foremost. And I understand that. And so it should be. I’ve always been wary about how I talk to him about the Maori side,” he said, hinting more about his family background and the choice Kalyn had.
“When he came to us and spoke about it, I gave him the full vision, but at the end of the day, it has to be his decision. I was trying to be all fatherly and talk to him about the big picture, hoping he would say yes. But his mum just started giving it to him as if she was some staunch Maori.” Andre continued.
“In my head, I was thinking, ‘stop it, you’re putting him off’. It was quite funny actually but she almost ruined my soft and calm approach by scaring him.” he said speaking of his contribution during Kalyn’s early days. On the contrary, his mother had been a silent pillar, whom only Kalyn knows what is deeply in her heart. The most important few words she shared with her son in private.
KALYN PONGA’S ETHNICITY – WHERE HE COMES FROM
Despite having represented Australia at the national level, Kalyn Ponga’s ethnicity runs deeper than that alone. The talented fullback is of Maori descent, as both his parents are from New Zealand. Kalyn once spoke about his ethnicity and heritage when he switched allegiance to play for New Zealand.
“My connection to New Zealand runs deep through every generation of my family,” he wrote.
“My father, Andre Ponga, was born in Palmerston North, and my mother, Adine Ponga, was born in Wellington. All four of my grandparents were also born in New Zealand.
“My roots, my whakapapa, and my identity are firmly grounded in this country and its people.”
