JACK VAN POORTVLIET’S HUMBLE RISE TO THE TOP
The talented scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet was born on 15 May 2001 and turned 24 in 2026. Born in Norwich, England, JVP grew up in love with rugby, a sport he chose over others.
Jack started playing rugby as a young boy while at Taverham Hall School. At that time, he was among the best of his age group, and he sought professional development, joining North Walsham R.F.C.

Growing up, he enrolled at Oakham School, where he continued to develop. Despite getting top development at Oakham, he joined the Leicester Tigers academy. His move to sign for the Tigers showed a lot of focus and determination to play rugby professionally.
At Leicester Tigers, he grew into a top prospect, as the top coaches moved him from fly-half to scrum-half. He developed quickly and went on to be part of the Leicester Under 18s league-winning team in the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons.
The following year, he made it into the 11 prospects offered professional terms to join the club’s development squad. Surely, this became the start of one of England’s best scrum-halves.
PROFESSIONAL CAREER
After joining the development squad, Jack van Poortvliet stood out, pushing for his debut. Come 21 September 2020, JVP made his Leicester debut against Worcester Warriors at Sixways in the Premiership Rugby Cup.
Jack continued working hard to be a mainstay in the first team, something that did not come easily. He went on to score his first try for Leicester against Harlequins on 13 February 2021, which won the “try of the week” award.
He became one of the fastest-rising talents at Leicester, slowly finding his feet among the best. In 2022, he signed a contract extension alongside other young stars, Freddie Steward and George Martin.

“I hate losing. Always have. I’d lose a tennis match, and I’d storm off in a sulk. Occasionally, it made sport a chore rather than a pleasure. I’d be so angry and sulky if I played badly or didn’t get picked. It almost took the enjoyment out of it. I’ve learned to enjoy it more, but I haven’t lost that competitiveness,” he said.
