THE RISE OF A GREAT LOCK – EBEN ETZEBETH’S EARLY LIFE
The talented lock was born on 29 October 1991 and grew up in Cape Town. He attended Hoërskool Tygerberg High School, where he showed his top talent. Surprisingly, during grade 10, when he was around 16 years old, he played as a wing.
He developed quickly, moving into the lock position, and represented Western Province in 2011 and 2012. With several top performances, he represented South Africa in the under-20 team that competed in the 2011 IRB Junior World Championship in Italy.
CAREER
After that, Eben had a great career that many young players can only dream of having.
After impressing at junior rugby, Eben Etzebeth signed for the Stormers in 2012. At the Stormers, he immediately became one of the first names in the team. He went on to play 61 matches before leaving in 2019.
During his spell with the Stormers, he also played for Red Hurricanes Osaka from 2015 to 2016, playing only 8 games.
In 2019, he moved on from the Stormers and joined French side Toulon. At Toulon, he played a total of 40 games, but he did not hit the ground as expected. He moved on from Toulon in 2022, seeking to find his best form after a spell of injuries and setbacks.
After Toulon, Eben signed for the Sharks, trying to rediscover his best form ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
