All Blacks coach Dave Rennie has not selected veteran fullback Beauden Barrett for his first two games in charge. After he didn’t make it to their first Nations Championship against France, many fans expected him to feature against Italy, but it’s not time yet. With Barrett being one of the most decorated and experienced stars on the side, he is not necessarily the current or, surely, the future.
In his place, youngster Ruben Love has taken over and has produced top performances. Ruben’s play has so far justified Rennie’s selection, but Beauden Barrett is not yet done, as the new coach has revealed.

Speaking about his team selection, Rennie cited the depth and quality within the All Blacks as one reason some players missed out.
“We’ve got a lot of depth, a lot of competition for places, but I guess we’re keen to keep some combinations together and get a little bit of continuity,” Rennie said.
However, despite not being selected for the second time, Rennie said Barrett had been training well, fighting for his place.
“Beauden’s been excellent. He’s contributing really well, training really well. He carved us up a handful of times today.” Rennie revealed.
But again, I gave Ruben his first Test at 10 last week, he played really well, and now he’s back at home with the connection with these guys,” Rennie added.
“So we’re keen to play him again, with DMac at the back,” the All Blacks coach continued, citing stability as one of the reasons.
