Heartbroken Black Ferns Sevens captain Risi Pouri-Lane opened up following their loss to Australia. New Zealand saw a 26-19 defeat in Bordeaux, giving Australia the bragging rights and lifting the 2026 HSBC SVNS World Championship.
Despite being the best team for the past 5 years, Risi wanted even more. Her desire to win proved to be too much, and past success could not heal her this year.
On Instagram, she shared the character that makes her one of the best leaders in women’s rugby.

Sharing on Instagram, Risi could not hide the pain but also revealed the good things the team learned.
“We fell short of the goal. But we did not fall apart. 6/9 tournaments,” she started acknowledging their shortcomings, but was also grateful for the success they had in recent years.
“Not every season ends the way you hoped, but every season leaves something behind. This one left us more connected, more certain of who we are and stronger in our understanding of what it means to stand the line. Because standing in line isn’t something we do when things are going our way.” Risi continued.
“It’s the choice to stay connected when they aren’t. The hurt is real. But so is the hunger. The line remains. And what is being forged within it now will carry us forward. ⏳⏳BRB⏳⏳” she finished, looking ahead into the future.
